In the early 1970’s and 1980’s there was a wild fervor in the length and breadth of the state to carve out institutions to promote Higher Education, study and research. The Idea of establishing a college at Lemalo, then remotely placed rural delta has haunted the mind and imagination of many educated, conscious and academically established persons of this locality which was materialized in 5th September (Guru Diwas) of 1978 with the establishment of MahapurushAchyutanandaMahavidyalaya.

Our institution is named after MahapurushAchyutananda, the renowned saint of Panchasakha tradition of medieval period, a sheer of distinction and who has spear-headed socio-cultural revolution, mobilization and engineering in the state. Keeping in view that the institution will render qualityand value based Higher Education at anaffordable lower cost to numerous people at the grass root level, economically down-trodden and belong to weaker/backward section of our society and will bring in a long term structural change in the dimension of socio-economic, Geo-political and religious-cultural plane.

The college was functionally operational and started imparting education to a small group of 60 students in an I.A. class in the session 1978/79. After clearing all requisite formalities our Institution bagged recognition and University affiliation in 1981/82. In the year 1984/85 the B.A. class (traditional) was opened up and in 1985/86 +3, Arts (3 Yrs. Bachelor of Arts Degree) courses were planted in the college. Our resourceful faculties, qualitative education and consistent outcome in Annual Examinations enabled us to obtain Honours seats in Economics and Political Science in 1992-93 with strength of 32 seats each.

In the academic session 1983-84, the traditional intermediate course was replaced and our college started +2 Arts with 128 seats. In the academic session 1987-88 the regular strength in +2 Arts was enhanced to 256 seats and it also marked the incorporation of new subjects like Logic and Sociology with 128 seats each. MahapurushAchyutanandaMahavidyalaya was also allowed to maintain +2 commerce streams with 64 seats in 1985-86.

In the academic session of 2013-14 the college has opened Honours in Odiaand History with a primary allocation of 16 seats each and +3 commerce in Degree stage. Our institution was registered under 2 (f) & 12 B to UGC on dated 31.03.2005 which has enabled us to obtain financial aid and assistance from University Grant Commission to meet the rising demand in the functional and structural aspects. It has marked a significant and all-round growth, progress and development of the institution.
